Sharkey developed Motel One’s five buildings into a coherent 208-room modern hotel. We did this in a number of ways: by taking the roof off the Cockburn Street building and building a two-storey extension; by creating a spectacular glass bridge between two of the buildings; by sinking a new core, to provide vertical transportation to two of the buildings; by hollowing out a much-needed light well in the centre of the complex, to allow natural light to make its way to each and every room; and by rationalising the levels between and within each building.
